3 PER. 11.

We took the damper off the propeller shaft, fitting its own front mechanic joint as originally. This has definitely proved that 75% of the boom was due to out of balance effect of the propeller shaft. There is still an exhaust boom at this speed, but not objectionable now the other is removed. The engine revs were 3100. There is another period of boom at 4,000 engine revs and on the overrun from 4,000 to 3,100 engine revs.

There has been no complaint of the exhaust valves sticking on 19 EX since the fitting of the heavy valves and shorter guides. We had no trouble with shorter guides in England, except that the stem clearance has to be kept to the minimum clearance or valve spring swish becomes noticeable. It should not be necessary to issue a standardisation sheet. The shorter valve stems were instructed right away for production from the results of our tests as reported to E.BY. A depot sheet was also sent out and Cricklewood were at fault in not following the depot sheet on Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s car.

We thank you for the information regarding the quantity of oil in the Peregrine gear box. It was not known definately and the dip sticks are being marked haphazard. We did not have any trouble with 2 PER. 11 gear box losing oil, but I was not certain whether any modifications had been made, that would cause less oil to be used. Our trouble is serious, the oil is leaking badly from the front housing of the ball race. It may be that the race has not been masked by the steel washer as was instructed for the other car, i.e. following the practice of the phantom and 25 HP. We shall have to dismantle the gear box and examine same.
