To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to CJ. " " WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} " " BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} " " DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ORIGINAL RE "GOSHAWK" ENGINE LUBRICATION. X.3591 heb{H. Biraben} 1483 Referring to the above, we send you herewith a drawing of an oil baffle which Mr. Royce wishes you to try in the "Goshawk" engine. He would like you to proceed first to fit these splashers and cut out all the oilways in the intermediate bearings and big ends without doing away with the oil feeds to the intermediate bearings, and without any alterations to the pistons. He would prefer not to add scraper rings etc. to the pistons owing to the extra weight, friction, and undesirable wear attached to them. Afterwards you can blank off, Mr. Royce thinks, the oil feed to the intermediate bearings, as the next step. We are considering down here the alterations to the engine to supply oil to the three main bearings only, to reduce the number of holes in the crankpin to two, and to have only one small oil groove in the big ends for getting a feed of oil to the small ends. The intermediate main bearings will be plain and would be fed from the three holes in the crankshaft. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} [STAMP: RECEIVED 1 DEC 1921 F C] | ||
