XIII 3 To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} & By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Sft.{Mr Swift} c. to G.W.H. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/K.Scholes. Cricklewood - 6.7.36. About four o'clock this afternoon a 30 HP. car arrived, GUL-16, having only done 1096 miles. The complaints are, very bad slow running and the steering wanders badly at high speed. There is 1" backlash on the steering wheel and the box is leaking terribly from the joint of the two halves of the box at the bottom. It has lost about 1/4 pt. of oil. Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} fetched me to look at it. The fitter tightened up the nuts on the box to the maximum, but the oil still leaks out of the bottom. The same trouble, the owner wants the car quickly, and cannot wait for the job to be done; as I told them, it was a day's job. Under the circumstances Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} is having a new steering column sent by train from Derby and sending the old column back to the Works because it is very bad with backlash.
