re 40/50 Oil Relief Valves.

As the result of investigating a request from a Depot for information regarding the pressure of the oil supply, we recently took the pressure, on a number of chassis, of the oil in the supply pipe to the rocker shaft. This we found to average 5 lbs. per square inch, instead of the 1 1/4 lbs. called for on the arrangement drawing.

The pressure of the timing gear case is approximately as stated on drawing, i.e. 1 lb.

We do not think that the high pressure to the rocker shaft is due to the strength of spring being incorrect, as we find that with the valve and spring entirely removed, the pressure [REDACTED] is a little above the drawing figure. It is intended that the figure on the arrangement drawing applies only to a test on the rig in the Works, we are quite in order, as they are able to maintain this figure on the average.

While we have not up to the present found any detriment in having this higher pressure, it is however inconsistent, and we are therefore bringing the point to your notice.
