We agree that the modified exhaust fitted to 103-MC is not as silent as the Silver Ghost. It is agreed however that it is a definite improvement over the present standard Phantom cars. In our opinion, one can ride in the car without the exhaust noise forcing itself upon one. If one listens for the exhaust, there is an appreciable noise. The modifications carried out on the silencer fitted to 103-MC were confined to alteration in the sizes of the holes in the baffles, and the size of the exhaust outlet, so that it is an alteration which could be adopted with the minimum risk and cost. At the same time, we have not been satisfied with the results of the silencer fitted to 103-MC and we are testing other silencers which may prove more silent but which will mean a definite alteration in design. We do not think it is necessary to send the cars to Derby - we agree with your views. To our mind, the point to be decided is whether we shall adopt the simple modification as fitted to 103-MC which gives a definite improvement, or whether we shall wait until a still quieter silencer has been produced. We will let you have the comparative HP. figures tomorrow - this will also answer your question re. hill climbing. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
