Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RECEIVED 6 NOV Xx5050 EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY4/G.6.11.28. CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS. ----------------------- Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}6/H.5.11.28. and the general position which has been stirred up by E1/M10.10.28. on the same subject, I do not think there is much the matter with our present practice. We have been turning out engines with gaskets of this description for quite a number of years, but complaints in regard to valve tappet clearance are few and far between. The position outlined by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} in his memo is well understood, and instructions have been issued to all Departments covering the question of fitting of gaskets and the risk of tappet clearances being lost. At the same time customers have been warned that when they fit new gaskets it is necessary to watch the tappet adjustment. The whole position arose because a car had of necessity to be despatched to Mr. Royce the day a new gasket was fitted. The Experimental Department knew the difficulty, but the urgency was such that the car had to be got away. I therefore do not feel that on an issue of this kind there is any need for us to get into a state of panic. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} BY | ||
