The condition and performance of various automotive electrical components after testing.

DISTRIBUTOR to LOP D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} 51618.

The contact points at the finish of the mileage were not considered to be in a good condition, considerable material had been transferred electrically from one contact to the other making the contact points very uneven. We have had considerably better results. It has been noted that when using a condenser with a lower capacity i.e. .240 MF. there has been less depositing effect and the contacts are cleaner. The standard capacity is .275 MF. to .325 MF. The condenser used on 18.G.IV had a capacity of .264 MF. The mushroom head which was broken was made of a supposed better non-tracking material XM.1000. Its textile strength is considerably lower than our standard material. We therefore do not propose to bring it into production. The mechanical condition of the unit was good.

DISTRIBUTION BOARD & CUT-OUT to LOP D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} 51907.

The distribution board remained in good condition. The cut-out has operated satisfactory and contact points showed no deterioration.

DYNAMO.

Higher output type, suitable for Half Charge Scheme. Ballast resistance to suit half charge scheme to LOP D.70843.

The dynamo output has been sufficient for the conditions of driving i.e. approx 4 hours, with full lights on daily. There has been sufficient current for starting purposes. The dynamo cut in at 17 MPH. The chart gives the output curves under the various conditions. The bulbs used were:- Headlamp bulbs Osram 12-14V-36 watts, side lamp bulbs Osram 16-18V 8watts, Facia lamp bulbs Osram 16-18V 3 watts. The dynamo brushes became noisy as the dynamo heated up and would be objected to.

LUCAS WINDSCREEN WIPER.

As previously reported the wiper failed early in the test through the failure of the teeth on the driving spindle. A new wiper was fitted and gave trouble through the shorting of the cable where it was attached to the windscreen by clips. The shorting caused a smouldering of the lining and had it occurred during the night time serious consequences may have resulted. The wiring of the wiper should be in a circuit with a fuse and not direct as was in this case.
