To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from EFC. c. SFT{Mr Swift}/Mr. Brock. X8783 do EFC2/T4.1.27. DYNAMO OR.75 & DISTRIBUTION BOARD EX CHASSIS 103-MC. COMPLAINT OF BLOWING FIELD FUSES. From examination of these units it appears that the initial cause of the trouble is failure of the cutout contact points to make effective contact. We cannot form an opinion whether this is due to incorrect setting of the cutout in the first instance, or to the known inherent defects in the arrangement of the cutout which have now been overcome by improvements. In any case, therefore, it would appear that we must take the responsibility of this failure. The cutout contact points are not now meeting properly and one would expect field fuses to go in succession because the main dynamo-battery circuit would not be properly complete. There are one or two faults with the dynamo, some resulting from this failure and some not. They are :- (1) Carbon brush dust conducting path across insulation at control brush holder. (2) Solder thrown from commutator connections; possibly armature end connections may be injured by local heating. (3) Machine has early control brush setting of 120°. (4) Brush flexibles are badly connected to the terminals. In the case of the negative brushes the terminal lugs are loose and bent. The rivets securing the insulating band are loose. On the distribution board, a in addition to faulty points, both field fuses are missing and the contact point spring arm has been altered from its standard shape, in an attempt to bring the points closer together, in order | ||
