Mr Tarrott's description of the peculiarities of the brakes adds to our stock of knowledge EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} - attention? overhending - or rejecting too much? my present new - DRB so much better than the old Central one is inclined to tax them in a far different way Lord Montagu - always uses his side brake Never his foot, which was not adjusted more than once a year. Now if the old side brake will do the work - then the present footbrake, so much larger, will also --- but I'm prepared to admit it may not be as perfect as we can get it. So far the reports need not alarm us with the exception of Mr Spottiswoode. R review shortcomings of the old central & conclude - it Could not 'pull up' the car in the same distance as the present brakes. I do not consider any of the DRB complaints as bad as the complaint it can bring against the old central, altho it was far better than the average. It suffered badly from elasticity between it & the roadwheel. From frying pan in not into the fire but into another frying pan which I think we shall be able to get out of. Ref long alpine descents. - Special difficulties almost if not quite impossible to make brakes which will stand these long descents without disadvantage & to delight if they are not permanently damaged by the way ordinary users apply them. look at Jungfrau elect Rly & the use of a elect generator brake. I think we shall have to make quite a different attempt to cope with such work outlines a 'compensation' brake scheme (open the exh valve on full down stroke - & a cyclic powerful brake. Sent instructions to works to ascertain horsepower absorption by such a scheme --- Not prepared to go back to Central without a struggle Another R to J Wider Brakes instructed - reduce wear 11-7-14 ⑨⓪ Brakes - thought of many times; heavy; expensive. Some tested. IS had try with wire wound Raybestos & braking drum. Your Gun epidemic will drive us to do something worse unless we keep the possibilities in view X2 Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Mer TC - 1) Waldron & 2) Blackshaw reports 11-7-14 ⑨③ Unsatisfactory - get heated if used excessively & out continuously thereafter. if people complain of squeak. Superior in unsurly pulling up. The mechanism quieter & away periods. g.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} fogetting(-?). 2) Bicky Blackshaw - much prefer DRB to old - driven by myself - old brake used to make the car dance across the road. Now one wears quicker than old if new car is driven by some fool; I clumsy they soon get hot & then other troubles start. Old car much better gearbox noisy periods in r-axle, & worn tyres away quicker RR customer & chauffeurs I've not met anyone outside RR Worker whom like the new brake. p Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X20 Mr Bailey Instruction Sheet 2/357 15-7-14 ⑨④ DRB - Ferodo of Q - Pressed.
