The car impresses me as being distinctly quieter through fitting these and I am very pleased with them although they are bound to have some disadvantages over countershaft brake, but they do so many good things for us that we must run a certain amount of risk in fitting them quickly. I cannot see from the model that we could have arranged these either by a better scheme or lighter details. The only parts that seem capable of being made lighter are the brake drums. The part on the axle cannot be improved much. I think that we could twist the whole fitting on the axle round slightly so as to allow more room for a very large oil drain. Fit cap collars, as already suggested, on split joint of shoes to prevent them coming away from the pins. The springs are not equal at present - all should be as strong as the outer ones. Render split pins, on fitter's adjustment, more accessible - perhaps across the head, if convenient. Protect the bearing on the actuating shaft from mud with caps and felt if possible. The pull-off springs can be 33% weaker. Some better means of quick adjustment of pedal should be devised - part of this work fouls the petrol cock in certain positions. F.H.R. I am sending through a suggestion for making the brake drums from sheet metal pressing. At present the form is unsuitable. F.H.R. | ||
