X4050 Dear Sirs, I regret the delay in replying to your letter of the 10th. inst. but I have only just returned from holiday. I am much surprised to hear of the two cases of the detachable flanges leaving straight side rims on your experimental cars. I may say we have not had a single case ourselves and have been running these identical rims and flanges at high speeds on our own test cars for a very long time. Is it possible that these flanges had become strained, and had therefore lost something of their proper grip ? We have ourselves made tests to determine the liability of the rings to leave the rim by centrifugal force but have not succeeded in producing this result. As you know, precisely the same type of rim has been used in America for a very long time, and we have made special enquiries on this point, but cannot find the shedding of these rings is regarded as a trouble by any of the American tyre manufacturers.
