44565 Expl: Dept: Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. England. 18th. July 1924. R-R America Inc., Springfield, Mass., America. To OY. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RE. STEERING WITH BALLOON TYRES. If you increase the section of the tyres, there is no doubt that you must reduce the steering lock because at present the steering is set so that there is only the minimum clearance between the tyre and the frame, and the tyre and the side steering rod. On the front axle for four-wheel brakes, the track has been increased 1", making it 57". This was done chiefly in order to arrive at clearances for the brake mechanism but incidentally, it was considered that it was desirable on account of larger section tyres, probably coming into general use. We are making experiments now with the lower geared steering and we anticipate it will shortly be standardised. Yours sincerely, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
