re Chassis No. GSF-4
------------------

With reference to your Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}2/R4.4.35, dealing with Sgll/El.4.35. We find the car had arrived at the Works yesterday morning, and understand that it was returned by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Dodd.

I tried the car, as also did Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} and LA.{L. A. Archer} We are certainly of the definite opinion that the brakes were below our standard for effectiveness, and were poor compared with what they were when the chassis was turned out from Derby, and also as a complete car.

An investigation into this matter has revealed the fact that the front rakes had oil on the shoes, which appears to have emanated from the bottom pivot cover joint. This matter is fully covered in a memo which Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} is sending through to BY (copy to yourself), dealing with this feature, as some alteration appears to be necessary, we having previously experienced this trouble - which has been overcome - on both the Phantom and Bentley cars, and it would appear that similar application is required to this car.

In view of this trouble it may be advisable to consider alterations being made before further cars or chassis are delivered, and possibly retrospective action.

As regards the "unpleasant rattle in the transmission when starting from second", this car is not fitted with the synchromesh damping scheme modification, this chassis having been delivered about six cars before this modification came through as standard. The fitting of this modification should effect an improvement. The present instructions are that in case of complaint this modification is to be applied, and this car, therefore, will receive this attention.
