As a result of a complaint made by Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} this car has been returned to the Works for - (1) Inefficient Brakes. (2) Rattle on second gear starting from rest. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} LA{L. A. Archer} and myself tried the car on its arrival. We agree that the braking is poor and below the standard of 20/25HP brakes, and was definitely not in this condition when it left us as a chassis on the 12th December last. We find on investigating the cause that the front brake drums and brake liners are smeared with oil. This oil has leaked from the joint made by the lower pivot pin cap and the stub axle. It is part of the routine of testing to dismantle the front hubs, generally inspect the brakes, and particularly see that this joint and the oil pipes are not leaking. It would appear therefore that the leak from this joint is a development. It will be remembered that as a result of similar trouble on Phantom II in service and on Bentley experimentally, the lower pivot cap on these two chassis have been modified. In view of the experience on this Trial's Car, it would seem necessary to review the job on the 20/25HP Chassis. With regard to the rattle on second gear when starting from rest, this gear box is not fitted with the anti-rattling device which has been introduced to overcome this trouble. We have dismantled and returned the gear box to the Works for this device to be fitted. [Signature] | ||
