- For the attention of Mr. W.A.Robotham -

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter of February 23rd concerning the question of suitable lining for use against the new type of cast iron drums.

We are not surprised to hear that you are finding the life of Ferodo Bonded Asbestos against cast iron to be less than you have been experiencing against steel drums. This, we think, is inevitable owing to the physical structure of the drum metal.

We are assuming that your new type of cast iron is Millenite, and if so there are certain interesting features involved in the use of this metal which have caused us a good deal of thought and research lately. In test and in practice Millenite has undoubtedly proved itself to be outstanding, but unfortunately, as you have observed, the ordinary Ferodo Bonded Asbestos lining gives a life reduced, in general, by about 25% from that obtained against medium steels.

We have found that Ferodo MR against this metal is a great improvement, although still not so good as against a medium carbon steel.

These various features are so interesting that we have felt recently that we could not do better than devote ourselves to a research, having for its object a complete understanding of why and how these various differences occur. Accordingly we are collaborating with Dr. Andrew of the University of Sheffield in conducting such metallographical researches.
