Re: Peregrine

I had hoped to have come up to Derby this week but have not made any effort to do so, principally because I gathered that you were all very busy over this question of aero engines and the connecting rod trouble.

One of the main things I wanted to discuss was Peregrine. I have in mind that on the 29th of November I agreed to order 200 sets of material and the going ahead with 20 advance chassis, and am wondering where we are really getting to, in view of troubles which still appear to exist on test, the main ones of which I will enumerate later.

Then there is also a memorandum DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/11.2.33 about putting the sliding joint of the propeller shaft in an extension of the gearbox etc., which I should imagine is rather an extensive alteration on cars already built, and I am not at all clear why this suggestion has been put forward, i.e. whether there is some serious trouble at that point.

The other matters taken from the test reports indicate:-

ENGINE:

Starting from cold troublesome and uncertain;
Exhaust down-pipe cracked at welded joint to front silencer;
Exhaust boom at 50 m.p.h;
Loss of water of 1 1/4 pints per day; (One wonders why?)
Loss of oil from sundry engine joints, including rocker cover;
Petrol consumption seems very seriously high even at the high speeds being attained, i.e. approximately 12 1/2 m.p.g;
Oil temperature, even in the winter temperatures, is still rising up to 110°C. and this on the car with the latest mods. of ribbed crankcase etc. We know that this is too high, so what are we proposing to do to correct it?
