(1) x632 Z569 FOUNDRY 67th Meeting, Oct. 30th, 1911. Re Foundry. Mr. Nadin drew the attention of the Committee to a letter which Mr. Johnson had received from Mr. Royce as follows :- "With reference to the progress in the foundry, it has been our practice for some time to remove everything from the foundry that could be made in drop forgings, and I think it would be wise to have some, at least of the parts made as die castings, pending, of course, the possibility of our being able to do our own die casting at some future date. For the things we are bound to make in the castings,- you will remember that I went off ill this time I suggested that Hunt (having had some experience) should be put on the drafting of patterns for plate moulding. This is our first move towards our actual economy in the ordinary way in the foundry, and is a gigantic move. This suggestion was adopted, and some more of our work will be done this way, although, considerably less has been done than I hoped for, but I hope for better progress later. Some benefit should be obtained shortly. The next move I suggest would be the formation of part of the foundry into a plate moulding shop, in which non-society hadnymen could be employed to do the work, instead of highly skilled moulders that are needed for ordinary moulding. This seems as if it could very well take place on the removal of the tinsmiths' shop, the tinsmiths' shop being the very building for this purpose. One bay might be sufficient for the plate moulding and the other might be used as a pattern stores. Louvres would have to be put into the roof of the one used for plate moulding to increase the ventilation. Possibly it might be wiser to keep both these bays and allow ample room for the work."
