We send herewith N.Sch.4668 which shews an experiment to determine whether oil can be fed to the inside of the 3rd motion shaft by means of a scoop which picks up oil flung up by the 2nd speed S.M.cone. If it is shewn that this scoop will feed oil inside the shaft the next point is whether a sufficient quantity is supplied to feed all that the 3rd speed gear bushes can take at highest temperature conditions, and at all speeds, with a surplus to pass on to the spigot bearing. To determine this the shaft must be drilled at the 3rd speed gear, and we suggest that bushes with 50% more clearance than standard are fitted to obtain the maximum leak conditions. The open end of the 3rd motion shaft should be reduced to ½" diameter by a plug so that oil definitely goes down to the 3rd speed gears. The surplus will run from the shaft end as before.
