SpectreCodename for Phantom III - Loss of Oil Pressure.

We have carried out tests with the SpectreCodename for Phantom III lower engine half to find the reason for the varying oil pressure. The tests were carried out with the lower engine case fitted in the rear of 21-G-IV and filled with two gallons of oil heated to a temperature of 60°C.

The lower engine case tested was with the latest scheme Lec.4202, two trap doors and an extra weir fitted on top of the oil suction chamber.

The tests show that the acceleration with this lower half is the chief trouble. The oil is swished out of the two rear compartments and over the back end. This is when using 1st gear. The oil swishing forward when braking is now fully dealt with, the front compartment being kept at a low level. The centre pocket where the suction of oil for the pump is situated is kept full of oil. To prevent the acceleration effect, we are having baffles made to lessen the communication between the rear well and the suction well, so that the oil will not so easily flow from the centre well into the rear. This should help cornering effects.
