Progress of SpectreCodename for Phantom III.

We are very interested in the results reported in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/KW.11.4.36, and under the various headings we remark as follows:-

Exhaust System.

The American method of lagging is apparently to build in the asbestos coating which is possibly sprayed on, and then cover it with a welded-on sheet steel outer case. We can do this as soon as we know how much lagging will be required, and it will undoubtedly make a neater scheme than winding on asbestos rope or sheet, and using sheet steel and clips for the outer casing.

The noise from the exhaust system stands out more owing to the silence of the power unit.

We are concerned with the tittering coming from the manifolds. These manifolds are cast with air cooling ribs on. It may be that these ribs are accentuating the noise, although we should not have expected this. We, therefore, propose to try some plain manifolds in which the metal at present constituting the ribs is utilised for thickening the main walls, to see if this will produce a more silent manifold.

Suspension.

The design work for incorporating the hydraulic auto-lock scheme for the dampers, suggested by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} is going ahead, but as this control is at present arranged we do not think it would be satisfactory without some help from the governor because of the absence of sufficient damping on the rebound. Hdy{William Hardy}, however, has an alternative method of control for the auto-lock, which we think would enable us to dispense with the governor control, and we are developingthis at the moment.
