On the present production Phantom cars the vacuum pump mounted on the timing case is a reciprocating pump with a brass piston sucking air from the autovac, thus providing the depression required to lift the petrol from the rear tank. On the 25HP. the depression in the inlet manifold does this. Air leaks past the brass piston are of no importance. The pump fitted to 19-EX. like the A.C. pump has no piston, but a fabric bellows which pumps petrol direct into the carburetter. This fabric type of pump prevents petrol leaks which a piston pump would not do. During our high speed test the vacuum pump enabled the autovac to supply the engine and also slowly to fill.
