X.2749 I agree with your memo of the 24th, but I think Mr. Hives memo with reference to this matter points out several operations which are unnecessarily fine and might be done away with altogether. The only point I fear would be dangerous is any departure from piston clearance which in all cases should be ample and uniform and therefore does not permit of much latitude. So serious is this matter that I think it would be wise to engrave or stamp on every piston the clearance it should run with maximum and minimum, at both the upper and lower end if necessary.
