WEAR ON VALVE GUIDES. - 40/50 ENGINE.

On the 40/50 engine we find that on some some cars, after they have run 10,000 miles, the wear on the inlet valve guides is sufficient to spoil the slow running of the engine. We have also proved that this wear is considerably reduced if lubricators are fitted to the valve spindle. 1.EX Car has been running from the first with a set of "DUCO" Valve Stem Lubricators. These consist of a cotton sleeve which has a light spring on the outside diameter so as to keep it in place. This sleeve is saturated in oil and slid over the valve spindle. We have run a set of these on another car and find that after 5000 to 6000 miles the cotton sleeve commences to fall to pieces, also the only way to lubricate the sleeve is to syringe oil over it, this makes a very messy job on the engine.

We have fitted to 4.EX Car a set of valve spring lubricators which consist of a cupped washer retained in place by the valve spring and which contains felt washers. There is means of lubricating the feld washers from the outside.

We would certainly recommend that a design for lubrication the valve stems should be considered for our 40/50 engine.
