FORM 226 JOHN MARSTON LTD. To Messrs: Rolls Royce Limited, Derby. (CONTINUED) -2- 3rd November, 1938. The appearance of a small fillet of solder on the tank is caused in our opinion by melting the solder to remove the tank from the matrix and there is evidence of sweating over the whole of the flange. In production of course, the tanks would be dip soldered to the matrix - both edges of the botton tank and the front edge of the top tank. We feel that your statement that you are continually up against defects of this art is likely to create a wrong impression. We realise that some of the first batch of oil coolers which were hand soldered gave trouble and that occasionally the hand soldering of tanks could be criticised. On the other hand you will appreciate the very great difficulty of controlling such an operation where the human element is the controlling factor. At the same time we are very anxious to co-operate with you in eliminating as far as possible any likely source of service trouble and our close contact with you over the last 12 months has been mainly devoted to this. During our telephone conversation the above points were mentioned and the lines we are working on discussed with you. Yours faithfully, A.W.Dunn. | ||
