With reference to your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}20/KW. 10.7.36., we would point out that no arrangements have been made or instructions issued to the effect that all replacement S.U. petrol pumps must be of the latest type. In various discussions with BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and Mr. Skinner, a definite arrangement was made that we should carry stocks of service petrol pumps of the old type, to drawing No. DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}447, for replacement work on all cars originally fitted with this type of pump. It was agreed that these pumps would be re-conditioned by the S.U. Co., including new diaphragms, but owing to the large volume of replacement work on these pumps, the S.U. Co. object to the expense of putting them into brand new condition. The procedure adopted is outlined in BY6/G.8.11.35. We now understand from your memo that the procedure you now suggest is to replace every defective pump with one of the latest type. If it is agreed to go to this expense on all replacement work and scrap all the service pumps now in circulation, perhaps you will issue the necessary instructions.
