S.U. Petrol Pumps.

With reference to Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}10/HR.16.7.36, we have read through By.6/C.8.11.35, and can nowhere see a decision made by BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} that replacement petrol pumps can be fitted with obsolete diaphragms. Since Mr. Skinner brought the matter to our notice we can also hardly believe that he agreed that faulty diaphragms were alright for replacement pumps.

We entirely agree with BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} that it is quite unnecessary for replacement pumps to have a new finish; also when some modification such as altered unions is brought in this does not affect the functioning of the pump and therefore has no bearing on failures. We do not agree, however, that any pump should be fitted to a customer's car as a replacement with an obsolete diaphragm which has already proved to be faulty, and we are quite sure that BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} takes the same view.

The question of scrapping all replacement pumps now in service does not arise, since a diaphragm modification affects this portion of the pump only.

If there is still any controversial point in connection with replacement pumps, we shall be glad to discuss the matter with BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and the Repair Dept.
