We are now about to test these carburetters on the road to see how serious this fault is likely to be under normal conditions. We understand that the Design Dept. have succeeded in getting out a scheme which incorporates a Duplex carburetter, and at the same time provides accessibility of the sparking plugs. We want to make a big effort to get this scheme detailed both to suit the existing 6-port head and also afterwards the 4-port head which has been designed but not yet detailed.

From past experience we believe we shall be fortunate if we have this carburetter and induction system ready for production in 12 months' time. Certain complications arise in that the large carburetter is not manufactured in England. We are finding out whether they would consider making this carburetter specially for us, or alternatively, whether they would have any objection to us manufacturing it at Derby.

(3) Piston Knocks & Overoiling. [Handwritten: Steel Skirt Pistons]

The semi-split pistons are better than anything we have had previously. Further development work is required, however, as piston knocks have developed on the Trials Car.

The oil consumption on the Phantom III at present running in France is only fair. We believe we can do better with both these features with further development.

(4) Broken Push Rod.

This is being dealt with by Design, and strengthened rods are running on the 15,000 miles car.

(5) Leak from the Pinion Bearing on the Rear Axle.

We believe that this trouble has been overcome on the 15,000 miles car.
