RE: POLICY FOR REPLACEMENT OF CAMSHAFT WHEN WEAR TAKES PLACE WITH AUTOMATIC TAPPETS. This matter has been the subject of further discussion, based upon the fact that we apparently avoid the wear of the camshafts and tappets by increasing the clearance of the plunger in the automatic control, and at first it would appear that this being the case if and when it was necessary to replace a camshaft on an engine with automatic tappets it would be desirable to replace the camshaft in question by a similar one, but when the question of starting is also taken into consideration the feeling at Derby is that it is a definite advantage to replace the automatic type of camshaft with the non-automatic type, as there is a marked gain in ease of starting. In view of the foregoing, therefore, we should continue the policy which was agreed to previously, viz. to fit non-automatic type of camshaft and make the adjustment solid by fitting a suitable plunger piece.
