C O P Y. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} LE12/C/31.5.37. Re Complaints on New Cars. I have received a copy of RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cy2/LS21.5.37 dealing with the points raised in my report for April. We have this month had :- 2 Phantom III clutches which have had to be changed because they jaggered badly. 4 Phantom III creaks in steering. 1 25/30 HP. creak in steering. 1 Bentley rear axle noisy. 1 Bentley with juddering front brakes. 1 Ph.III rocker shaft which was found to be cracked, causing the valve mechanism to stick. It would appear that the cause of the creak in the steering is a very delicate matter of fitting and it would seem that this matter is not entirely overcome with the present procedure adopted by the Works. With regard to the slackness in Phantom III gearboxes, I appreciate that the clearance which you are working to is as fine as it is possible, but we do still definitely suffer from this complaint on finished cars. With regard to the synchro-mesh being fitted with unlapped cones, as far as I can ascertain, we have not had any of these cars on test yet. As soon as we do, I will report to you if there is any improvement. With regard to the low tension wire, I have written RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}, suggesting that it would be expeditious if we could fit new terminals to all cars in London. Actually on test we get very little trouble with carburetters flooding. I have now received a supply from the Works of the 100 mesh gauzes and I am arranging for these to be fitted, together with the special plugs, on all cars tested from now onwards. | ||
