118/ Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}5/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 17th February, 1938. Gandy's, The Gandy Belt Mfg. Co.,Ltd., Wheatland Works, SEACOMBE, Ches: Your Ref: I/U. (For the attention of Mr. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Ikin). Dear Sirs, We should be very pleased if you were to install a u-speed rig in your laboratory. It is impossible for us adequately to test all linings we receive, the only satisfactory way is for manufacturers to test their own. We shall be pleased to show Mr. Ikin and Mr. Davis our rig; Wednesday, the 23rd instant, would be quite convenient. We must warn you that you will not see all the testing you suggest, as a fair amount of time is spent changing linings. Our rig suffers from one serious disadvantage; it is essential for the brake drum to be round, .0005" eccentricity on the 12" dia. being enough to spoil the record. Our drums easily distort this much, and we have no means of quickly correcting for the distortion by grinding. An essential feature of a satisfactory rig would be a small portable grinding wheel mounted so that it could traverse the drum face. Alternatively, a flat disc could be tested in place of a curved shoe. If our rig should happen to give trouble when you arrive, then we would only be able to show you the method used, and no actual useful results, except ones previously taken. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
