FORMATION OF DEPOSIT IN SPECTRECodename for Phantom III SILENT TAPPETS - Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smith.15/KW3.9.35.

We have carried out the following tests at the request of Mr. Smith.

A test tube containing a piece of S/ZN steel was practically filled with the oil to be tested and a cork, grooved to allow for expansion, inserted in order to exclude air as far as possible.

The test tube and contents were then heated continuously at 100 - 110°C for a period of 200 hours.

Three oils were tested viz., Oil to Air Ministry Specification D.T.D. 109, Price's Motorine "C", and Wakefields' Castrol "XL".

The appearance of the oils after test suggests that Motorine "C" forms the most deposit, D.T.D.109 next, while the Castrol "XL" was practically unchanged, with no sign of deposit. The Castrol "XL" was not of the "Patent" variety.
