R.R. 235a (100 T) (S.H. 159. 11-8-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2800 TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} & DY.{F R Danby} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET. R4/M12.5.24. Copy to - CJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EXHAUST. 49230 Mr. Elliott is sending you a design for this engine, divided into two, i.e. two groups of three. It will necessitate serious alterations to the vacuum feed position or design of tank, but we are convinced that the most economical way of arranging the exhaust for such an engine is by the two groups of three as arranged in our earliest 6 cyl. engines. The alternate scheme of a very large exhaust pipe is impossible to get in with the present dimensions and even then is less advantageous. It will be noticed that the two sets of pipes do away with the expansion joint and the forward down pipe which is near the bonnet should not be so hot as when the six exhausts all had to come that way.
