re. E.A.C. STARTER.

X9450

Mr. Elliott will be finishing today or tomorrow the design for the main switch and the automatic magnetic arrangement for the sequence starter.

Mr. Clarke will endeavour to find out whether the windings we suggest are anywhere near the best that can be suggested for the purpose. I think the best winding we can think of should be put in in the first case, when a test will shew us in which direction we ought to modify it.

It may be thought that we had spent rather more money on this apparatus, but I hope it will be found that all the parts are very makeable ones, and above all that when the apparatus is once constructed it will remain in good working order indefinitely.

It will be remembered that we are particular that this starter shall be more silent than that of any other car, that is, in its action of coupling and uncoupling the motor to and from the engine. (We know the flywheel gearing will depend upon the perfection of the cutting of the teeth.) It is for this silence we justify the extra complication. It will also be remembered that being a large engine the motor has to be double geared or the drain upon the battery, or the weight of the motor would be excessive. With the double geared motor the Goshawk form of starter would not be possible, as well as being too noisy.
