REDESIGN OF PH.III REAR BRAKES.

With reference to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/G.22.3.38, we agree that in an official redesign, the sole object of which is to give greater simplicity, the rear brakes of Ph.III should be 16" dia. with a single pair of shoes per drum.

We think that the brakes should be made as follows :-

Rear Shoes. As now, but with the tipping shoe removed, as the shoe forgings are the same. If necessary the tipping shoe can easily be reintroduced.

Front Shoes. Aluminium, with tipping shoe. This is £3.6.0d. cheaper than present.

Linings, Front and Rear. BZ.

Rear Brakes intermediate shaft. Similar to RR.Sch.1116, and same dia.

Leverages. Total foot to rear, the 20% reduction, now standardised, to be retained. This makes the rear brake units 1,280. Direct braking to rear, leverage 26.5. Hand leverage to rear, about 80 : 1, as now standardised.

Rear Drum. New, to save weight of metal and reduce cost.

Linkage. The rear axle linkage retained as at present.

We understand that your objection to the 14" dia. drum scheme was that we had mis-calculated the leverages: this we strenuously deny.
