X.8650. EAC. SILENT STARTER GEAR.

We have now made preliminary tests of the first set of these units made in the Expl. Dept.. and as a result of these tests we can say that certain definite alterations are necessary.

It has already been arranged with Mr. Davis to instruct the cores of the actuating magnets a little longer than allowed for on the LeC., in order to reduce the air gap through which the operating flux has to pass.

This applies to the main and relay switch unit.
It will be remembered that in the present unit [first model] we have done this by packing the cores up from the bottom, but this in the case of the main switch interferes with the 'off' position stop,of the lever, so that this stop has had to be altered on the present unit.

We attach to RD's copy our Specifications (tentative) of Production Inspection, Adjustment & Test, of
(1) The actuator Box.
(2) The combined main and relay switch unit.

The present figures given, however, are subject to alteration.
The specifications are attached so that RD. may make his drawings agree with the figures we have given, which various figures for the gaps have been proved to be satis-factory on the actual job.
