To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. BJ. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} ORIGINAL RE LUCAS TYPE ER6 MAGNETO. X8793 It is understood that you view with disfavour any further negotiations with the Lucas Co. incident upon further experimental work with the Lucas type ER6 magneto. Also that our attitude as a firm to such procedure is mainly a matter of policy. From a purely technical point of view it appears to us regrettable that work on this magneto, which, unlike all others we have tested, does shew some reasonable prospect of affording a satisfactory solution of certain difficulties, should not be continued. In addition to other points to which we have referred in our various reports, it may be mentioned that this Lucas magneto, of equivalent weight with our standard, and without the use of a sleeve, secures equally good slow speed characteristics. The Watford magneto with its short flat cams is, we consider, wrongly timed - it would be possible, with the sleeve and correct timing, to get still better slow speed characteristics. We are experimenting on Watford magneto timing with a view to putting up to that firm suggestions for improving their magneto. The timing of the Lucas ER6 magneto is more correct on principle, not to mention the extra degree of silence resulting therefrom and the absence of pulsation on the control. Contd. | ||
