X4038 Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/MJ. March 23rd.1931. Major Searight, Messrs. H.M.Hobson Ltd., 47-55, Acton Vale, LONDON.W.3. Dear Major Searight, Thank you for your letter of the 13th. March. The position at present appears to be that the centrally vented single line tank unit is going to be turned down because we are not giving it a chance in our designs. This, I think, is a very unfortunate state of affairs. Under the circumstances, I wonder whether you could spare a day to come up here and go over the whole job with me. With the chassis in front of us, and with almost every representative type of body available we should be able to decide the best possible arrangement of the single line unit from the gauge point of view and also the type of side filler we require. If, as a result of our discussions, we consider that there is a possibility of making something that will work and at the same time will overcome our difficulties of appearance, I should propose to make up a tank to suit such a unit and to carry out tests on it. If it should prove successful, I do not think there is much doubt that I could convince Sir Henry Royce that the single line gauge was worth such treatment. I could arrange to be available almost any day within the next fortnight. If you should be able to come up we could, at the same time, discuss the best dash unit scale for the existing tank unit. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
