To E& Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} AJS. } LE CANADELHenry Royce's French residence. c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} X8070 RL/M11.4.26. PHANTOM - ALUMINIUM ENGINE, LIGHTER, X.8070 X.8300 INCREASED HP. ETC. X.8430 X.8840 This seems quite ready to be put in hand to Mr. Elliott's LeC.2229, and to his other lightening suggestions in E2/M1.4.26. Don't however do anything that looks as if it might prove troublesome in quantity production. What do we hope from this increased cost - (1) Better riding and steering. (2) Greater speed of acceleration and hill climbing, or permitting slightly higher gear (avoid 14-tooth axle.) (3) Less detonations, permitting higher compression which will take place by better filling. Can we not have a better induction system, profiting by some recent knowledge? Has Mr. Stent got his still further lightening of the clutch and flywheel ready: we want at least 25%. I do not think we ought to worry with LeC.2230 - at present rather ultra.
