Our calculations indicate that the minimum acceleration of the Merlin inlet valve at 1,000 RPM. is 104 ft/sec2 and the maximum acceleration of the same valve is 3,870 ft/sec2 at the same speed.

We shall be glad to know if you agree with these figures, and also at what speed the Merlin valves bounce by visual observation.

Have any tests been carried out to determine whether the chromium plating of the rockers is necessary if the valve spring load is reduced?

Do we know why plating was not necessary on the Kestrel?
