Re: Mr Lappin's Chassis B-117-JY. Mileage 12,620. ----------------- This car came in at Mr Lappin's request for a top decarb. The car having just completed 4000 miles on the Continent, and we decided to lift the cylinder block and see what condition the con rods were in. No.4. could be rocked over 1/8", the shells being slack in the housing, No.5. was slack but not to the same extent. These two rods were taken off and new shells fitted. The shells taken out are being forwarded on to you, to show the necessity of reducing the cut away at the back, which has been instructed by you. The area of the actual bearing shows the cap half to have distorted, the outer portion failing away due to lack of support. The top shells are similar. A crack has developed in the cap shell of No.5. This distortion causes a tightening up of the centre portion of the bearing, and on No.5. cap shell the bearing material has been rolled over. This distortion is probably an unknown cause of bearing seizure. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} | ||
