Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. 3rd May, 1938. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. C.S. Steadman. With reference to Thermostat, code X.30065/5, which you handed to the writer after having punctured the bellows and ascertained that it only went open 3/32", we have investigated this matter with our Experimental Department and it has now come to light that in order to obtain the higher setting you require, namely, 78/80°C., and without using a special liquid they added extra turns to the valve making a total of eight instead of our usual three to five. This, of course, robs the bellows of its effective stroke in the event of bellows puncture and fully explains why you only obtained a lift of 3/32". We confirm again that to obtain the lift you require it is merely necessary for us to supply units with additional convolutions in the bellows. We are accordingly making up two samples - one for test and the other which you can puncture. These will be forwarded to you in the course of the next few days. Yours faithfully, For S. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES) LIMITED. THERMOSTATIC CONTROL DEPARTMENT. To avoid delay all envelopes should be addressed to the firm. | ||
