From the Rolls-Royce experimental archive: a quarter of a million communications from Rolls-Royce, 1906 to 1960's. Documents from the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation (SHRMF).
The cause of 'singing' dynamos, suggesting the issue is slack bearings and noting a particularly noisy unit on car 1.EX.

Regarding the singing of the dynamos, we feel cer-
tain that this gets worse in time, possibly due to the bearings
getting more slack.(suggest testing with slek bearings).
We shall be glad to know if you are making an effort to prove
the accuracy of the suggestions made some time ago as to the
cause of the singing, because on 1.EX the dynamo and
cutout have been unsatisfactory in many ways, and the dynamo
is about the noisiest thing on the car.
