ORIGINAL BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 20HP. STEERING COLUMN. x5430. x5470. With reference to BY5/G26629., we have already gone into the question of the proposed new positions, and send you herewith N. schemes 2919/20. N. sch. 2919. shews the proposed new chauffeur column, and we think does not call for any explanation. N. sch. 2920. shews the wheel 2" lower than present D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} With reference to the difficulty with the pedals we suggest that it is not as great as appears from the drawing; provided it is impossible to wedge the foot between the footboards and the column there seems very little objection to the foot sliding along the column, and in this respect it seems better to be 2" lower than 1" or 1½". In striking the pedal the foot is slightly turned to one side. The pedals themselves are made to clear the column by being shortened on the plates .250", to which there seems to be no objection. We should like one of these columns fitted up on a car with a 2" lower seat as soon as possible for general approval. (We suggest 17-G-4.) Should the position of the pedal be objected to we can, by a slight modification to the position of the dash bracket, and slight changes in the accelerator and brake pedals, push it further away from the column, but we believe it will not be necessary.
