Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. "New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I" Gear Box. I give below an extract of a report I have received from one of the members of my staff, Mr. Goose, who you will remember has been for some years one of our representatives in India, and is now working on my staff for a period. We have not considered this of very much importance as we have not been able to reproduce the trouble on the road here, nor have we had complaints from customers, but as Goose has had very considerable experience of Indian conditions, I think his report is worth considering. "I have found that on practically all these boxes the 1st. and 2nd. speed wheel clanks or fouls the ball bearing on the gear box at the two extremes of movement when the box is hot. Also one or two cases of the 3rd. and 4th. speed wheel doing the same, the 4th. speed dogs bottoming. It may or may not be possible to reproduce the above symptoms on the road in this country, but I can assure you that in tropical countries it would occur climbing severe gradients at temperatures ranging 80 - 95° in the shade."
