B/ PROD TA/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EVL/M16.3.35 C. to Mr. MOW. HC. BENSPORT - RADIATOR GRILL & APRON. We send herewith W. sch. 3706. showing the radiator, grill, and front apron, for Bensport. As this radiator has chromium plated shutters it has been essential that the grill be made easily detachable. This we have done with spring clips. It will be necessary to determine experimentally the required stiffness of these spring clips to make them operate easily. As an alternative we have suggested several positions for these clips which might be tried. If there is any difficulty with respect to adjustment we suggest that packing be placed underneath the bottom supporting clips. The construction of the grill is that which we discovered to be generally used. The frame is of angle iron, chromium plated on the outside, and tinned on the inside. The wire is chromium plated prior to being formed into a mesh. The ends of the wire are turned over a wire frame which is tinned. At intervals this frame is spot welded into the channel. We have shewn .5" mesh, and either .080 or .092 iron for the grill, as this is what is used by Barker's, but on the old Bentleys a mesh of 3 to the inch was used with .064 wire. The shutters can be of steel, and tinned, now that we have this grill, as we shall wish to paint the shutters to match the coachwork. The front apron in all respects follows the design for Peregrine. We have 'veed' the finger grooves. TA/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
