EFC4/T3.11.25. NOTES RE PACKARD (SPLITDORF) DOUBLE SPARK MAGNETO. (As described in Vol.XVI. No.3 of the Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers, p.307, and diagram p.303). The circuit diagram of this magneto as given is according to the attached diagram, in which, however, the two primaries P1 and P2 and their respective secondaries S1 and S2 wound over them, are wound on two legs of the same core. It is, therefore, immediately certain that any flux change taking place in one leg of the core will, (banishing the unlikely possibility of magnetic flux leakage) take equal effect on the two primaries and the two secondaries respectively, on the two legs. Though the electrical system is completely duplicated, i.e. each has a primary, a secondary, a contact breaker, a condenser, and a switch, nevertheless the electrical duplication is not entirely complete, because of the magnetic link which exists. The system is not a double spark system in the sense of producing two independent sparks, [strikethrough]each dependent upon[/strikethrough] the working of its own electrical system, but is only a double spark system in an extended sense in which the Liberty battery ignition system, with its mechanically duplicated contact breaker, is a double spark system.
