Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Gry{Shadwell Grylls}, The purpose of this letter is partly to acquaint you with some of my manifold business interests, and partly to ask you if you are interested in rubber mounted fly wheels, as our name ensures immediate delivery. I have found out in the course of correspondence with Bugatti's that they hold a patent for mounting a fly wheel on a rubber centre and they claim that crank dampers etc. can be dispensed with. The most interesting thing they told me was that General Motors were negotiating for the use of their patent, possibly with a view to reviving in cheaper form, their spring centre fly wheel, I imagine. As Paul Quinn can stick rubber on closer than any poor relation, I thought that if you contemplated any experiments on this line, maybe he could do applications for you. Have you had any gaskets from us to try, consisting of thin sheet, either aluminium or steel, coated each side with a few thou. of synthetic rubber vulcanised on? If you have not yet had them, we would be very pleased to supply them as they are now being tested with some success by some Diesel engine manufacturers, etc., and arrangements ... [Handwritten note in margin]: If the properties of the rubber remain constant when subjected to oil and heat for some time, this appears highly interesting. We might be slightly interested.
