1029 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}6/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 5th May, 1938. Messrs. Bendix Ltd., King's Road, Tyseley, BIRMINGHAM. (For the attention of Capt. Irving.) Dear Sirs, With reference to Capt. Irving's visit here, on consideration we feel that no useful purpose would be served by sending you scheme drawings of our brakes at the moment. We have a section of the D.O. who prepare experimental schemes, and we think that they should have no difficulty in fitting your brake into our drums, when necessary. We would, of course send you a copy of the drawing for criticism. We were very interested in your brake which we think is a considerable advance, and achieves uniform lining pressure, combined with a partial wrapping action, most ingeniously. You are obviously going to have considerable success with it. We are disappointed that your demonstration car should not make the best use of it. We feel that some wrapping action is necessary on the rear brakes of heavy cars using small drums in order to get a reasonable parking brake, and your brake would give this: but we think that some modification to hydraulic operation on the front is desirable because of the complications of independent suspension on steerable wheels. We hope to be in a position to try this brake at a later date. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
