(2) The proposal under (1) deals with the effect, to minimise the cause Mr Royce suggests we should try a spring coupling with friction between the engine and gear box. The springs would take up any unevenness in the drive and the friction should prevent the parts from getting into a state of oscillation.

Mr Barrington should get out a specification covering the above (2) and make application for a patent.

(3) A proposal which combines (1) and (2) somewhat, is to mount the foot-brake drum on the shaft through a jaw clutch or other positive drive having a suitable amount of slack in it and to prevent the brake drum from reaching a state of oscillation by means of friction.

This sketch shows a suggested method of carrying out the job. It is not necessarily the scheme which must be adopted.
