X180 To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/MJ.28.1.31. EXPERIMENTAL CARS. Replying to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}3/E27.1.31. 14-EX. is still a useful car to us because it is the only Phantom car we have which has a separate gearbox. At the present time we are rushing through an experiment trying Maybach clutches for a Helical third speed. This information is very urgently required by W.W., therefore we cannot afford to get rid of 14-EX. It is not possible to carry out these experiments on Phantom ll because the design of the gearbox does not allow sufficient room and it would mean making an entirely new gearbox.
